St. Sabina's Parish has been blessed for 18 years to have Sr. Lucille Buhl as an active member of the parish -- living her vocation.
On August 15th, Sr. Lucille celebrated her 56th anniversary of answering the call to vocation as a professed religious.
The faith family at St. Sabina joined Sr. Lucille at Mass as she once again said "Yes" to the call in the renewing of her vows.
Mass: Father Tobin celebrated the Mass which also commemorated the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Reading I: God's temple in heaven was opened,
and the ark of his covenant could be seen in the temple.
A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun,
with the moon under her feet,
and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth.
Then another sign appeared in the sky;
it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns,
and on its heads were seven diadems.
Its tail swept away a third of the stars in the sky
and hurled them down to the earth.
Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth,
to devour her child when she gave birth.
She gave birth to a son, a male child,
destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod.
Her child was caught up to God and his throne.
The woman herself fled into the desert
where she had a place prepared by God.
Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
"Now have salvation and power come,
and the Kingdom of our God
and the authority of his Anointed One."
Reading II: Brothers and sisters:
Christ has been raised from the dead,
the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
For since death came through man,
the resurrection of the dead came also through man.
For just as in Adam all die,
so too in Christ shall all be brought to life,
but each one in proper order:
Christ the firstfruits;
then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ;
then comes the end,
when he hands over the Kingdom to his God and Father,
when he has destroyed every sovereignty
and every authority and power.
For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
The last enemy to be destroyed is death,
for "he subjected everything under his feet."
Gospel - Lk 1:39-56: Mary set out
and traveled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
"Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled."
And Mary said:
Sister Lucille then made her profession of vows.
Father Tobin administered the blessing to Sister Lucille as the congregation joined in prayer.
The congregation joined Sr. Lucille for dinner and cake after the Mass.
| From Fr. Matt | From Fr. Tobin |
| Sr. had been in primary education for many (many, many) years. The last school she was at was St. Stephen's (I think) where Msgr. Huhmann had been pastor. When he was sent to St. Sabina's in 1986, he invited her to come out to run the parish school of religion. From that Sr. sort of branched out in to all sorts of pastoral ministries and the rest, as they say, is history. Sister really was a natural in parish work. Even after she "retired" she was still super busy. Even her work with Greg Cullen at the funeral home is a real ministry of caring and listening and healing. These days, movies about super heroes are quite popular (Superman, Batman, Spiderman, etc.). If they ever make a movie about "Super Nun" Lucille should get the starring role! Congratulations, Fr. Joseph Matt | Thank you, Sister for all your dedication and all the blessings that you have brought to this parish community over all these years since Msgr. Huhmann brought you to us about 18 years ago. Your vision and your understanding of the universal Church have been a real asset to this parish.
Your deep empathy and love of the people have endeared you to many, many families in this community. We don't want to proclaim you a saint just yet, but watch out, you're getting awfully close!!. Congratulations, Fr. Chuck Tobin |
What is a Calling?
While women today have many opportunities to serve the Church in various capacities, religious life offers women a unique way to dedicate their lives to God.
Some religious women are called to live in community, called to share their prayer, their ministry, their gifts and their lives with one another.
Their shared commitment empowers them to go forth to live the gospel in our world. As a community, they embrace a common vision: a commitment to love the poor, to love one another, to live simply and to unite the whole of their lives serving Christ.
As religious women, they are called to vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, and it is these vows that shape who they are and how they live out their lives in the world.
God is Calling - are you listening? Sr. Lucille suggests three things if you think God is calling you.
PRAY - Spending time in prayer is essential during this time.
ASSOCIATE WITH PEOPLE IN PRAYER - Many religious orders offer retreats and other opportunities to join in prayer.
VISIT WITH OTHER PROFESSED RELIGIOUS - Seeking others who share your values and dreams makes for a great experience of Christian community. Sister Lucille is available for listening and prayer as well as Father Tobin.
Prayer for more Priests and Religious
Lord Jesus Christ, our Priest and our Shepherd,
we are conscious that
"the harvest is great and the laborers are few."
Help us become a generous sharing community
so much in love with your teachings that from
our numbers you may call many good priests and religious
to continue your work in the
Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph.
Thank you for assisting me in my life's calling and
deepen my desire to increase our friendship
as day follows day. Amen
Most Reverend Raymond J. Boland
